Summer Study Abroad in Spain

Why Spain?
Spain is a land of cathedrals and flamenco dance, modern architecture, and mouth-watering paella. But, it is also a culturally-diverse country with relics and remnants of Roman, Moorish, and Celtic cultures, and its world-renowned cities like Sevilla, Barcelona and Madrid reflect these influences. Spaniards have a flair for living in the moment and relish late-night parties, or fiestas. It is no wonder that the Spaniards balance the vigor with which they experience life with a little rest. The siesta is a natural part of the Spanish day, and provides a chance to escape the heat of the afternoon and prepare for an evening of good food and time with friends.

Program Information**

Live in Seville, Spain
Seville is the capital of Andalusia, the southernmost region of Spain and the home of flamenco dancing, bullfighting, and some of Europe’s most vivacious and colorful festivals. Morocco is just across the strait of Gibraltar, and Andalusia is a crossroads of European and African culture with a flair entirely its own. The region’s culture is exemplified in Seville, where a history of cross-cultural sharing can be seen in a dazzling array of North African, European, and Middle Eastern architecture. Today’s Seville is a graceful and vibrant city where it’s easy to spend an afternoon following cobbled alleyways or relaxing in a palm-lined courtyard or to spend a night with friends sharing a plate of tapas and dancing the night away.

Program Snapshot

Academics : During the summer term at Universidad Pablo de Olavide, students take either intermediate or advanced Spanish language courses. All classes are conducted in Spanish.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in cultural activities that may include a trip to the beach, a guided tour of the city center and Barrio Santa Cruz, a visit to a museum, or a flamenco show.

Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a transcript and 3 credits from Universidad Pablo de Olavide, a fully accredited Spanish institution.

Housing and Participant Life : Participants in this program stay with local Spanish host families. Staying with families is a valuable part of becoming immersed in the local culture, and it’s one of the best ways for students to practice their Spanish outside the classroom. Host families are very welcoming and enjoy having foreign students stay with them. All host family accommodation includes three meals every day plus laundry facilities.
