SIT Study Abroad: Morocco: Migration and Transnational Identity

Explore the complex dynamics of migration, transnationalism, identity, and cultural resilience. Gain a nuanced understanding of the governance of migration and how it can contribute to a more just and inclusive world.

WHY STUDY ABROAD IN MOROCCO?

In a globalized world, understanding the complex dynamics of migration, cultural diversity, and the reality of global development is key for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. International migration is at the top of the global policy agenda with an understanding that the economic, social, and cultural benefits of international migration should be effectively achieved and that the negative effects of undocumented migration could be better addressed.

This program explores the interconnectedness of these issues in the context of migration from Morocco to the European Union, through the analysis of the experiences of Sub-Saharan migrants, including the challenges they face, the policies affecting their lives, and the dynamics of migration and cultural diversity in Morocco. You will examine the global governance of migration through issues of poverty, climate change, development, integration, intercultural communication, and the human rights of migrants.

In the Mediterranean city of Tangiers, you will visit NGOs that provide socioeconomic support for Sub-Saharan migrants, empower women, and advocate for human rights and social justice. At the border with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, you will gain insights on cross-border movement between Morocco and Spain, issues of undocumented migration, readmission, and the externalization of borders. In the Netherlands, you will visit Dutch Moroccan communities to enhance your understanding of identity and integration. Discuss issues of transnationalism, cultural resilience, and intercultural communication with third-generation Dutch Moroccans. Visit the Werelhuis and Van Gogh Museums to explore art, representation, and cultural diversity.

QUOTE

"This experience was truly eye-opening and I am so grateful for it. The focus of the overall program was migration, however, it brought so much more to light politically, socially, and economically, allowing students to approach it from various lenses. The lectures and themes of the week also led to excursions to different cities in Morocco such as Fez, Tangier, and Chefchaouen, but I will still admit Rabat was by far my favorite city. We covered so much in the first two months in classes, so when the Independent Study Project/Internship period arose, we were able to independently work on our chosen projects/sites."
